Established in 1993 by the Town Council, the Main Street Program, a member of the National Main Street Center, has assisted in historic preservation through the Louisiana Main Street Facade Grants. More than 3 dozen buildings have been revitalized in this manner, with grants and private investment of nearly $1,000,000.
Since the early 1980's, St. Francisville has boasted an Historic District with more than 140 structures listed on the National Register of Historic Places. A stroll through our downtown is a treat for the senses! Homes and gardens, and commercial structures are filled with life - many buildings house shops and offices, while the homes are private, some are open for tours during the Audubon Pilgrimage each March.
The Main Street Program also offers assistance to property owners in town who wish to restore buildings to historically accurate appearance and color. An Historic District Ordinance has affected protection of property values with restrictions prohibiting garish new construction with the district.
Promtional assistance for all our local events is also a priority of the Main Street program. Even the creation of some - like Art in the Park - which celebrate the cultural history of St. Francisville.
