Southern Garden Symposium & Workshops

9:00 A.M. - 3:45 P.M.

A full day of gardening demonstrations, lectures, and garden tours. A gourmet lunch will be served in the romantic Ruins Garden of Afton Villa. Participants must choose a morning workshop and an afternoon workshop.

9:00 - 9:30     Meet at your workshop site and enjoy light refreshments

9:30               Workshops - demonstrations - lectures

1. Contain Yourself!  Everything's Going to be All Right -  Watch as Jim Wilson of Victory Garden and HGTV fame demonstrates container gardening.  Learn about how to select ornamentals, vegetables and herbs and arrange them into pleasing designs.  Learn how to plant and maintain containers of various sizes and various sites as well as how to get the maximum display value out of container plantings.  Location: Afton Villa Ruins. Speaker: Jim Wilson.  Limit 100.  Note: This workshop is ONLY offered in the morning.

2. Garden Tour of Historic Rosedown Plantation -  A walking tour of the grounds of the plantation.  Speaker: David Floyd.  Limit 50.  Meet in the meeting room behind the gift shop on the plantation grounds.

3. Good Bugs/Bad Bugs- What's Bugging You? Enjoy a slide presentation of garden insects, both pests and beneficials.  Learn about the different organic pest control products and how they can work for your garden.  Find out about Louisiana's four stinging moth caterpillars and how to control them.  See how bugs can be a fun and interesting study.  Bring insects from your garden for identification.  Location: Speaker: Linda Auld.  Location: Market Hall, Royal Street, Limit 50.

4. Everything You Want to Know About Camellias,   Demonstration on Grafting, Rooting Cuttings, Pruning, Pets and Disease Identification on Camellias.  On Site at Avondale Gardens, Sewell St.: Speakers: Max and Marie Mizell.  Limit 100

11:30   Adjourn and travel to Afton Villa for lunch. Hosts: Mr. and Mrs. Morrell F. Trimble

12:00   Lunch - Stroll the gardens at Afton Villa, browse the book sales area, visit with guests, lectures and other gardeners.

1:45   Afternoon Workshops begin at same sites as morning

2:45  Adjourn - visit historic Grace Church and cemetery grounds adjacent to Jackson Hall.

6:00  Speakers' Gala - Virginia, Home of Dr. and Mrs.  Sam Vinci on Royal Street in St. Francisville.
